I really tried.
I tried hard not to write about the recent news that Amazon was employing neo-Nazis to keep immigrant workers “under control” in its German warehouses.
But it’s futile.
I can’t restrain myself.
So, here are my two Deutsche Marks on the whole sordid affair. And, I really don’t think I should mince words.
The Amazon storm troopers were employed by a firm named, HESS Security – an apparent allusion to one of Adolph Hitler’s most infamous henchmen, Rudolph Hess. Coincidence? Not likely, HESS’ director is known to have ties to fascist football hooligans and other right wing hate groups. Its employees all dressed in black uniforms and boots, with military haircuts. Unless they were making some type of avant-garde fashion statement, everyone in Europe knows exactly what these individuals and their outfits represent. Plus, according to all reports, they targeted non-German workers exclusively, with their racist intimidation tactics. Lovely.
Amazon has pleaded ignorance, alluding that the firm was hired by a sub-contractor. And I guess I believe them. But that still doesn’t give the online retailer a pass. In fact, I find it inexcusable. How can HQ not know Nazis, yes Nazis (I’m still incredulous) were employed on Amazon premises? What kind of communications breakdown happened here? What type of monumental corporate dysfunction are we talking about?
In Amazon’s defense, someone I know offered the argument that they’re so big, it’s probably impossible for them to know everything that’s happening in their entire business chain.
My reply is that it’s exactly because they’re so big that they should know everything that’s happening in their entire business chain.
I’ve had plenty of reasons to diss Amazon in the past, but this one really, really takes the cake. Or should I say, the strudel.
Get your act together, Amazon. Pleaaaase!
Oh, and do take some inspiration from the brave citizens of Dresden – maybe by supporting efforts like these, as atonement.
Breaking: News just in that Amazon has decided to wipe the Nazi egg off its face.
